3 Australia have launched their new network cap plans - and e-pay want you to help!

As most stores are now aware, to support the launch of 3’s new prepaid caps, e-pay and 3 are sending members a range of merchandise for you to wear whilst in-store to remind your Customers about these great new cap plans.

Any 3 customer should now purchase 3 mobile caps instead of the 3 bonus plans.

SUPPLIER NEWS 05.01.09– Freight & Staffing Changes

MDI has recently advised Nextra Head Office that due sky rocketing freight costs over recent years and a through review of their freight policy, they are unable to continue to their 'Free into Store' deliveries as of 1st January 2009.

In order to make this transition as smooth as possible for Nextra Members, MDI will continue to subsidise their actually freight costs and anticipate this to be agreeable to all parties affected. Based on the above, all orders from January 1st will incur a flat $30 + GST freight charge. Backorders will be a flat $20 + GST freight charge.

Further to these changes, as many QLD Members will be aware, Des Eichmann has decided to move on. MDI is happy to now introduce Dean Bavinton who will commence with MDI from the 1st February 2009 in far north QLD, Brisbane North, Sunshine Coast and Country and pick up where Des left off. Should Nextra Members need to contact MDI in the mean time, please contact Melanie Russell, the QLD Customer Service Officer on 07 3713 6609.

MEMBER NEWS 15.12.08 – Nextra Sweep December 2008

Nextra Accounts wishes to remind members that the upcoming sweep will also include charges for Collins Debden invoices and therefore will be a larger amount than usual for most members.

Please check statements thoroughly and contact either Graeme, Carmen or Sherelle if there are any queries or concerns with charges or subsequent payments. If either party is unavailable or the office is unattended due to Christmas Shutdown, please email the accounts department with your concerns and best contact details who will follow up as soon as possible prior to the sweep.

Please be advised, that due to the festive season public holidays, the Nextra Group sweep will take place on the 24th December 2007. Statements will be sent out to all Members on the 10th of December, as normal, advising the balance due. Should there be any issues with this dates, please contact the Head Office on 07 3902 4500.

PRODUCT NEWS 08.12.08 – Supplier Price Increase Notices

As many Members will be aware, the Australian Dollar has depreciated dramatically in recent months. Due to this drop in value, more suppliers have been hit hard by the change in supply costs which in turn, a portion of will be passed on to members. The following suppliers have notified Nextra Head Office of price changes starting from 1st January 2009:

  • Mont Marte Art Supplies
  • Jasnor Australia
  • Collins Debden General Stationery

Both of these suppliers have attempted to hold their prices throughout 2008 however this is no longer possible in 2009. Head Office suggests that members look closely at their needs for early 2009 and take advantage of the current pricing structures available.

Greg & Danielle would like to thank all the Nextra Members who made an effort to attend their local Nextra Roadshow/Member meeting held over the past two weeks.

MARKETING NEWS 24.11.08 – The first of many up and selling

Nextra Booval Fair News has made a big start with its on-line store. Within a matter of weeks it has been able to gain Back-To-School stationery and text book lists from 11 local schools and placed them on its web site. Whilst previously Booval only directly supplied two of these schools they say this facility has extensively increased their BTS sales opportunity in the local area. The site supports parents purchasing on-line or printing out a version that can be used for in-shop purchases. Considering that schools on average support about 200 list purchases at $100 per list the addition of just 5 schools could add an extra $100k in sales to the store per year. Not to mention the top up sales from families that come into the store to purchase having established the BTS relationship.

Booval also have a range of local promotion flyers on their site such as an ABC Christmas Catalogue, Back-To-School Offer, Ink & Toner flyer and the Nextra BTS/Xmas Flyer. Booval has already seen the increased exposure this on-line store has given them and now many of the schools listed on their site have a direct link to their on-line store for parents to access; all of which helps strengthen the store and its sales.

MARKETING NEWS 17.11.08 – Need some More

By now most stores who ordered BTS Boxes should be receiving these in store. For those members that missed out, or didn't order enough, Nextra Head Office has a very limited quantity still available for order.

This option is a much cleaner and professional looking option than brown paper or plastic bags, and fits more than the Nextra or NewsExtra Environmentally Friendly Bags.

To benefit from cost economies of scales, the BTS Boxes which are made from Heavy duty box-cardboard, will be co-branded Nextra & NewsExtra, incorporating the two logos and websites.

The boxes dimensions are 10cm(h) x 48cm(l) x 32cm(w) and have a cost price of $0.87 each + GST & Freight. Delivery will be last week of November 2008. Earlier dates maybe able to be met should this request be made.

MEMBER NEWS 17.11.08 – Australian Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook 2008-09

In the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) for 2008-09 released on November 5, the Australian economy is forecast to grow at 2 percent in 2008-09, ¾ percentage points lower than expected at the May Budget. Real GDP growth is expected to remain subdued at 2 ¼ percent in 2009-10. The outlook for commodity prices has been revised down and the terms of trade was forecast to fall by 8 ½ percent in 2009-10. Inflation is expected to fall to 3 percent through the year to the June quarter 2010 as global growth slow, while the unemployment rate is forecast to rise to 5 percent by June quarter 2009 and 5 ¾ percent by June quarter 2010.

As a consequence of the global financial crisis, tax receipts were expected to be around $40 billion lower over the forward estimates than anticipated at the May Budget. A reduced budget surplus of $5.8 billion or 0.5 percent of GDP was expected for 2008-09.

MEMBER NEWS 17.11.08 – World Weekly Economic Indicators

A number of business surveys has shown that the world economy is slowing down sharply. In US, the Institute of Supply Management’s manufacturing index plunged in October to 38.9, the lowest level since 1982. A reading below 50 indicates contractions. The index of non-manufacturing fell from 50.2 to 44.4. In the Euro area, the purchasing managers’ index (PMI), which is based on the surveys of buyers in manufacturing and services industries, fell from 46.9 to 43.6, the lowest reading since the survey began in 1998.

  • Employment increased by 34,300 to 10,768,300.
  • Full-time employment decreased by 9,200 to 7,688,200 and part-time employment increased by 43,500 to 3,080,100.
  • Unemployment increased by 7,000 to 487,900.
  • The number of persons looking for full-time work increased by 10,200 to 338,200 and the number of persons looking for part-time work
    decreased by 3,200 to 149,700.
  • The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3%.
  • The male unemployment rate remained steady at 4.0%, and the female unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage point to 4.8%.
  • The participation rate increased by 0.1 percentage point to 65.3%.

So what is Mo-vember?

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is an annual charity event held during November.

At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo, raising money along the way to benefit men's health - specifically prostate cancer and male depression.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at official Gala Partés, Mo-Office and Mo-Town parties where Tom Selleck and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to be the Man of Movember.

While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (ladies who support their guys or just love Mo's!) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés.

But it' s not all fun and games, so why the extreme behaviour?

Which ever way we look at it, men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy for men is five years less than for women.

Prostate Cancer: because every year 2,900 Australian men die from prostate cancer and over 18,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Therefore it is often advised that stores should have staff sign a confirmation that they have sited the OH&S Manual and know where it is located in store.

PRODUCT NEWS 27.10.08 - Inflation Rate Now 5%

CPI growth was 5.0 % over the year to September 2008 and 1.2% over the September quarter. Underlying inflation was 4.7% over the year and 1.3% over the quarter.

The main contributors over the quarter were: rents (+2.1%), water and sewerage (+12.3%), house purchase (+1.3%), automotive fuel (+2.0%), deposit and loan facilities (+1.9%), overseas holiday travel and accommodation (+4.9%), electricity (+4.6%) and property rates and charges (+6.1%).

Moderating the increase were falls in: child care (-22.9%), pharmaceuticals (-3.9%), audio, visual and computing equipment (-3.9%) and motor vehicles (-0.7%).

The Tax Office today reminded businesses that September quarterly activity statements and super contributions are due by COB Tuesday, 28 October 2008. Tuesday, 28 October 2008 is also the due date for employers to pay all super contributions for the September quarter. The Tax Office also reminded businesses that from 1 July 2008 they must use ordinary time earnings as defined in the super guarantee law, to calculate super guarantee contributions for their employees.

The key points from the September 2008 Leabour Force Statistics are:

  • Seasonally adjusted, unemployment has increased by .2% to 4.3%.
  • Employment increased by 2,200 to 10,737,400.
  • Full-time employment decreased and part-time employment increased.
  • The participation rate remained steady at 65.1%.

MEMBER NEWS 13.10.08 - QLD Anti-Discrimination & Retail Shop Leases Functions to be Absorbed into New Tribunal

The new Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) to be established in late 2009, is expected to be organised into three divisions:

  • Human Rights Division
  • Administrative and Disciplinary Division
  • Civil Disputes Division

The retail shop leases tribunal will be absorbed into the Civil Disputes Division, while the Anti Discrimination Tribunal will be absorbed into the Human Rights Division

The matters heard in the civil disputes division may include:

  • residential tenancy disputes currently performed by the Small Claims Tribunal
  • minor debt claims currently performed by the Magistrates Court
  • retail shop lease disputes currently performed by the Retail Shop Leases Tribunal
  • general civil dispute functions currently performed by the Commercial and Consumer Tribunal

The recent and continued global downturn is already showing in pricing with paper mills and suppliers rushing to increase prices. Most stocks have been increased by 10% with a few reaching 20% and warnings of further increases before the year end.

We will do our best to minimise the flow-on effect of these rises and will forward you an updated price list as soon as it's completed. New pricing will come into effect on 1st November, 2008.

UPDATE # 1: Newsextraink November flyer

There will be a November Newsextraink flyer that will go until the end of January. Flyer numbers are needed by Friday 24th October. If you do not reply the figures from the September promotion will be used.

There will be exclusive products & offers available only to Newsink/ Newsextraink, twin packs & value packs that will be promoted to give your customers value for money. You must keep promoting your business; remember Newsink/ Newsextraink prices are 99% of the time cheaper than the “majors”. This can only help to bring customers into your stores, with the current economic climate your customers will be looking for value & cheaper prices.

Newsink/Newsextraink will not proceed with the November flyer until we are sure what the prices will be. All pricing should be confirmed early in November.

Update # 2: Update on price increase for all consumables

I will endeavour to keep you informed but as you are aware there is a lot of confusion about prices because of the large & suddendrop in the Australian dollar & it will take a little while for the market to settle down.

Tonnex will have to increase prices as they run out of old stock from next week. Increases from 1st October: HP up 8%, Epson up 7.5% & Brother 6%. The prices previously announced were based on the dollar at 80c US but it has now dropped to around 65c to 68c, a 40% decrease. Because of this there could be a second price increase next month.

We are still waiting on price increases for all consumables. Some vendors are waiting until November to announce new prices while Canon & Lexmark have not announced their price increases as of yet.

Compatible prices (Keytek): there is no price increase which should make these more competitive against the originals because of the greater price difference with originals now increasing in price.

Tonnex and Keytek are centrally billed suppliers.

MEMBER NEWS 06.10.08 - Daylight Savings Commences

Members are reminded that Daylight saving has now commenced in NSW, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia from Sunday October 5, 2008 and will continue until April 5, 2009 (AEDST).

Daylight saving in Western Australia commences on October 26, 2008.

As Queensland does not have Daylight Saving, members are reminded that this may cause issues in contacting staff at Head Office. A staff member will open Head Office earlier than usual for until the end of the daylight savings period and Head Office will also close a little later to try and accommodate these time differences for WA. This means that the Head Office will be open from 8.00am AEST (9.00am AEDST) and will close at 5.30pm AEST (6.30pm AEDST)

MEMBER NEWS 06.10.08 - Australian Labour Market Statistics

The ABS has published the latest release of Australian Labour Market Statistics (Cat 6105.0) which can be downloaded here.

The publication summarises and presents statistics on a number of key labour market indicators including unemployment, underemployment, average weekly earnings, participation rates and industrial disputes. This release also contains a special report on measures of casual employment.

The analysis of casual employment reveals that:

    Although young people made up 18% of all employees, they comprise close to a third of casual employees. This is closely related to the relatively high participation of young people in education and their tendency to combine work with study.

    While women represent less than half of all employees, they were more likely than men to be employed as casuals. This is because women are more likely to work part-time hours to enable them to balance work with family commitments.

    There is a large concentration of casual employment in the accommodation and food services industry, as well as agriculture, forestry and fishing and arts and recreation.

MEMBER NEWS 06.10.08 - Federal IR System Pay Scales increase

Further to e-bulletin 1557, Members are reminded that following the Fair Pay Commission decision given earlier this year pay scales are increased from the first pay period on or after 1 October 2008 as follows:

    An increase of $21.66 per week ($0.57 per hour) to the standard Federal Minimum Wage that adjusts the weekly rate to $543.78. The Federal Minimum Wage increases from $13.74 to $14.31 per hour.

    An increase of $21.66 per week ($0.57 per hour) to all rates in pay scales.

MEMBER NEWS 06.10.08 - Retail Sales Trend Data August 2008:

The trend data shows that there have been four months of weak retail trend growth since April 2008. No growth was experienced in February or March this year. These results confirm a continuing decline in the annual growth rate following the peak in October 2007 when the annual growth rate was 8.3%. The annual growth rate for the year to August 2008 had fallen to 3.2 %.

All states, except New South Wales (0.0 percent) and the Australian Capital Territory (-0.9 percent), had an increase in the trend estimate in August 2008. States with the largest increase in trend estimate were Queensland, Tasmania (both +0.9 percent) and South Australia (+0.7 percent). Victoria, Western Australia (both +0.2 percent) and the Northern Territory (+0.4 percent) had a moderate trend growth.

This option is a much cleaner and professional looking option than brown paper or plastic bags, and fits more than the Nextra or NewsExtra Environmentally Friendly Bags.

To benefit from cost economies of scales, the BTS Boxes which are made from Heavy duty box-cardboard, will be co-branded Nextra & NewsExtra, incorporating the two logos and websites.
